SEO for tour operators and travel companies in 2026 rests on three things: tour, hotel and destination pages that state their facts in plain text and matching schema, photos that Google Lens can connect to those pages, and measurement through Search Console's new generative AI and multimodal reports. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same SEO fundamentals as classic search and have no additional technical requirements. This playbook covers what to build before the winter and spring booking season, how to stay safe during the September 2026 spam update, and which numbers show that the work pays off.
How travelers search in 2026: AI Overviews and AI Mode
A traveler in 2026 often gets a first answer from Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode, with supporting links to the pages that answer each part of the trip. Google's documentation on AI features and your website describes AI Mode as most helpful for exploration and complex comparisons, and says both features may use "query fan-out": several related searches across subtopics that feed one answer.
A trip question is a comparison by nature. "Family ski week near Ottawa in February" splits into dates, lodging, transport, price and what children can do. A tour page that answers each of these in text has more chances to be one of the supporting links. The same Google page sets the entry conditions: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and Google states that no special files or schema.org markup are required.
What a tour page should state in visible text:
- the route, day by day, with place names;
- season and departure dates, group size and minimum age;
- what the price includes and excludes, in the currency you sell in;
- how to get to the starting point and where travelers stay;
- cancellation terms and the documents a traveler needs, with links to official sources.
Search Console now shows this visibility. On 3 June 2026 Google launched Search generative AI performance reports, and as of 31 August 2026 they cover all websites worldwide. They show impressions in AI features by page, country, device and date.
SEO for tour and hotel pages: entities, schema, reviews
Each tour, hotel and destination on a travel site should be one page that describes one thing, with structured data that repeats the facts a reader sees. Google's AI features guide asks site owners to make sure structured data matches the visible text on the page and to keep Business Profile information up to date.
| Page | Schema.org type | Facts to show in text |
|---|---|---|
| Tour or itinerary | TouristTrip with an Offer | Days, route, inclusions, dates, group size |
| Tour operator or agency | TravelAgency (a LocalBusiness) | Legal name, address, phone, hours, languages |
| Hotel, lodge, guesthouse | LodgingBusiness or Hotel | Address, room types, check-in rules, amenities |
| Destination guide | TouristDestination, TouristAttraction | What to see, best season, how to get there |
| Questions and answers | FAQ in visible HTML | Real questions from calls and emails |
Two limits are worth knowing before anyone promises rich results. Vacation rental structured data is intended for sites that already work with a Google Technical Account Manager and have Hotel Center access. Google's review snippet guidelines support ratings for LocalBusiness and Organization only on sites that capture reviews about other businesses, so testimonials a tour operator publishes about itself are ineligible for star ratings. Those reviews still help the reader: quote them with the traveler's first name, the trip and the month, and keep the Google Business Profile up to date.
Our AI-readable website work covers exactly this layer: page structure, schema that matches the text, and internal links between tours, destinations and the booking form.
Visual search: the new multimodal filter in Search Console
Since 24 September 2026 Google has been rolling out a "multimodal" search type filter in Search Console that reports searches made with images. According to Google Search Central, the data covers Google Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search and Chrome's "Search this image". The filter works in the Performance report and in the Generative AI features report, the data can be exported, and the rollout is global.
Travel is a visual category. People photograph a landmark, a hotel facade, a ski slope or a dish and ask what it is and how to get there. Pages with original photos of the places you sell can now see whether that demand reaches them.
Google's image SEO best practices give the checklist:
- use your own sharp photos of the route, the lodging and the views;
- write descriptive filenames and alt text, for example "chalet-mont-tremblant-winter.jpg" with alt "Chalet at Mont-Tremblant in January snow";
- place each photo next to the text that describes the same place;
- submit an image sitemap if photos load from a CDN or a booking engine.
Staying safe during the September 2026 spam update
Google released the September 2026 spam update on 24 September at 09:15 Pacific time; it applies globally and to all languages, and the rollout may take up to two weeks. The Search Status Dashboard lists it after three earlier spam updates this year: 24 March, 24 June and 18 August 2026.
Travel sites often grow in ways that Google's spam policies name directly:
- Doorway abuse: "pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page", such as dozens of near-identical "tours from [city]" pages.
- Scaled content abuse: using generative AI "to generate many pages without adding value for users", such as destination guides rewritten from other sites.
- Site reputation abuse: third-party content published mainly to use the host site's ranking signals. Since 30 August 2026, a manual action under this policy affects results for users outside the EEA; for users inside the EEA its impact does not apply, and over time the affected section may rank independently from the rest of the site.
- Expired domain abuse: buying an expired domain and repurposing it mainly to manipulate rankings with content of little value to users.
How to read a drop in traffic: wait until the dashboard marks the rollout complete, then compare the same weeks of 2025 in Search Console. Travel queries are seasonal, and a fall that also happened last year is seasonal. A fall concentrated in one template, for example city pages, points to a quality problem. Check the Manual actions report as well.
Ads for the winter and spring booking season
Paid search and video fill the weeks before organic pages gain positions, and Google changed both in September 2026. On 24 September Google announced that Demand Gen image ads in 9:16 full-bleed format on YouTube Shorts, and image ads in Gmail, now open the landing page with one tap. On 23 September Google announced the AI Brief closed beta for AI Max in French, German and five more languages, and Google announced a report that joins search term, ad assets and landing page, due later this year.
AI Max writes ad text from landing page copy and can send clicks to other pages on the site, so the same tour pages you build for SEO also shape your ads. We covered the setup in what to set up in Google Ads before Black Friday 2026. For campaign management see targeted ads.
What to measure
Measure travel SEO by booking requests first, then by the visibility that leads to them. The table lists the numbers we record for a baseline and then report against, on the same query set.
| Metric | Where | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Booking requests, calls, emails | Analytics key events, CRM | Revenue the site produces |
| Impressions in AI features by page | Search Console, Generative AI features report | Which tours AI Overviews and AI Mode show |
| Multimodal impressions and clicks | Performance report, search type "multimodal" | Demand from photos and Lens |
| Clicks for "tour + destination" queries | Performance report, search type "Web" | Classic organic demand |
| Brand and source mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity | A fixed set of trip prompts, checked weekly | Whether assistants cite your pages |
| Manual actions, security issues | Search Console | Safety after each spam update |
We set this up as part of AI search analytics, with a monthly report against the recorded baseline.
